New Metro Police Authorized Officers have hit the ground running as 200 new recruits reported for duty throughout the City’s regions.
THE City remains committed to reducing crime through increased police visibility. This was aptly demonstrated with the deployment of 200 new Metro Police Authorised Officers who will be deployed throughout the City in the following regions:
Central Region: 100 (90 in the central business district (CBD) for by-law enforcement including street trading compliance and 10 for suburbs in the central region)
Inner West: 50 (Pinetown CBD)
South Region: 10
North Region: 20 (Verulam CBD and the airport) The remaining 20 officers will be deployed for tactical support and VIP services.
The new recruits will ensure police visibility in and around the beachfront, implement strategic roadblocks (unannounced in areas), conduct stop and search operations, and intensify routine patrols. They will also conduct taxi rank inspections and blitz operations. Metro Police Spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu said they are excited about the new recruits that have been deployed throughout the City. “This is a step in the right direction to curb crime and ensure a safe City, during the Easter period and beyond.
We are confident the new Authorised Officers will assist in the City’s crime free development plan.” He said the Metro Police was working hard to heed eThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda’s call to ensure a safe City, free of crime and drugs. “We continue to leave no stone unturned to ensure the City returns to its glory days and that leaves no room for lawlessness. We are working to make the City safe for residents and visitors,” he added.
