Residents from George Hill Informal Settlement thanked the City for donated seedlings as part of a community garden the Municipality has established there. This will help to ensure their food security.
ABOUT 200 seedlings to further support their community food garden was distributed to residents from the George Hill Informal Settlement. This comes as the City recently established the George Hill food garden to help ensure food security in the impoverished community. e informal settlement is besieged by unemployment, poverty, and crime. ITRUMP Area Based Management identified a need to support this community.
One way they are doing this was through establishing an organic vegetable garden. e seedlings were donated by the City’s Agri Ecology Department. Horticulturist Lungile Dladla said the programme aims to strengthen food security among in the community. “We encourage residents to plant their own food for their sustainability and to fight hunger,” said Dladla. George Hill volunteer Mary-Jane Dlulisa extended her heartfelt gratitude to eThekwini Municipality. “We are thankful that the City continues to honour their commitment to us. We do not have money to buy seeds as we are unemployed. We are grateful for the seedlings and are very committed to continue taking care of this garden,” said Dlulisa.
