Businesses fined during by-law enforcement blitz

EThekwini Municipality’s Area-Based Management Unit facilitated a by-law enforcement operation within the CBD recently.

A CLOTHING retailer was slapped with a R5 000 fine for illegal dumping and a incorrectly placed dry wall partion during a by-law enforcement operation conducted on AB Xuma Street recently. The operation was conducted by a multidisciplinary team comprising of Metro Police, the Business Licencing Unit, the Fire Department, Electricity, Health, Enforcement, and Environmental Health who all worked together to ensure compliance.

Various other fines and notices were issued for non-compliance to an array of the City bylaws. Head of Area Based Management Linda Mbonambi reassured residents that his department is committed to expediting service delivery. “This was a five-day centralised enforcement operation which aimed to accelerate service delivery. The blitz was aimed at ensuring, among others, business compliance and following health and fire regulations. We are not being harsh, but are providing comprehensive service delivery to maintain order in the City and ensure the wellbeing of residents,” said Mbonambi. The operation targeted establishments such as salons, food shops, chemists, clothing shops, and street vendors.
