City Hosts BRICS Urbanisation Forum

ETHEKWINI is the proud host of theBRICS Urbanisation Forum taking place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre on 26 and 27 July. The theme for the forum is ‘Advancing, strengthening and building urban resilience’. The BRICS countries, which are Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, will bring to the table experts, governments, and organisations to share best practices to contribute to the equitable, just transition towards sustainable urban development. In the lead up to the start of the forum, the Municipality led a delegation of
member countries to showcase interventions in creating a resilient city.

The delegation visited the following areas:
The Brickworks Project
The Avoca node where the Brickworks Project lies is strategically located in the fastest growing sub-region in the north of eThekwini. It is one of three major logistical parks that are being developed by Investec and JT Ross. The Municipality will support the development of this node by building social and affordable housing.

The Cato Ridge Multi Modal
Development Project The Cato Ridge Logistics Hub, also referred to as the inland port, is a strategic freight and logistics hub that will contribute to the decongestation of the Durban Port and central business district.

The core project clusters are:
- Truck stop and staging
- Intermodel Terminal Facility
- Logistics and Industrial Parks
- Tanks farm and pipeline

The New Durban Bay Waterfront and Marina Project
The project will create a world class waterfront that will support the tourism economy, create jobs, attract investment and community upliftment. The new development will cater to cultural and leisure themes. The development will include four- and five-star skyline hotels, a museum, an exhibition centre, a science centre, a mall, apartments, and an African cultural centre.

The KwaMashu River Rehabilitation and Recycling Project 
The rehabilitation and recycling project is situated in the heart of KwaMashu. The project is supported and sustained through a centre where recyclable material such as plastics are fi shed out of rivers and streams in the area. Material that is not recyclable is used to create building blocks which are sold to the community. The centre has created jobs for locals and contributed to less traffi c on major routes.
