City commemorates Mandela Day with several clean-up campaigns
A Mandela Day clean-up was held in Lamontville where service delivery challenges were addressed.
SEVERAL clean-up initiatives were held in the City with the aim of improving the community and honouring the legacy of Nelson Mandela. Some of the activities included clean ups as well as planting vegetable gardens at schools. One of the City’s clean-ups was held in Lamontville in Ward 75 where a multidisciplinary team, led by the Cleansing and Solid Waste Unit’s education team, worked with residents to reclaim the community.
Other service delivery challenges that were tackled in the area included clearing stormwater drains and f ixing potholes. An activation was also held at Effingham Secondary School where a school garden project was undertaken. Simultaneously, a clean-up was held at the Newlands Taxi Rank and the Newlands West Jazz Park as well as a clean-up in Hammarsdale and the beach sand dunes. Items collected during the clean-up included plastic bags, beverage bottles, food wrappers, bottle caps, clothing items, polystyrene containers, cigarette buds, plastic food utensils, and tree logs. The City urges everyone to play a role in keeping their spaces clean.
They can do this by following proper waste management practices which includes adhering to waste collection scheduled days, taking out their refuse on the morning of collection days, and avoiding littering and illegal dumping. Keeping the environment clean is a collective responsibility. The public is urged to play theirs.
