EThekwini Municipality has stepped in to help the George Hill Informal Settlement by establishing a food garden in Ward 31, Sydenham.
THE City has stepped in to assist the George Hill Informal Settlement community by establishing a food garden. The informal settlement is besieged by unemployment, poverty, and crime. To address these challenges, ITRUMP Area Based Management (ABM) identified the need to start an organic vegetable garden to support poverty-stricken families.
ITRUMP ABM reached out to their sister departments for help to make the garden a success. Volunteers from the informal settlement work tirelessly under the mentorship of Althea Bantom from ITRUMP ABM. The vegetable garden was launched by the City on 24 July. ITRUMP Senior Manager Hoosen Moolla applauded residents for their hard work to ensure the garden was a success. “We are a caring City that provides support to residents where we can.
We will continue to provide ongoing support to ensure this food security garden continues to grow and provide for the community,” said Moolla. George Hill resident Thamsanqa Mzobe extended his heartfelt gratitude to eThekwini Municipality on behalf of all the beneficiaries for the garden project. “We are grateful that the Municipality is supporting us. We vow to take care of this garden which is a source of food for many families and continue to make it a success,” he said.
