Cleaning up Montclair
Municipal employees cleared an illegal dumpsite which has been an eyesore in Montclair.
AN illegal dumpsite, which posed a health hazard to Montclair residents, has been cleared by the City. Head of the Area Based Management Unit Linda Mbonambi said illegal dumpsites pose a health hazard and cost the City millions of rands to clear. He was speaking during a clean-up held in Ward 64, near Clanville Road. “Illegal dumpsites are an eyesore in our communities. They should be reported swiftly to avoid an outbreak of rodents and snakes as well as an unpleasant smell and hazardous insects,” said Mbonambi.
He said residents have a role to play to ensure a clean City. “We are committed to helping residents keep their areas clean. They can be involved in recycling to help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill sites,” he said. Streetlights were also repaired as part of the operation. Ward 64 Councillor Gavin Hegter welcomed the programme.“The cleanup was in response to the complaints from the community about the illegal dumpsite. Illegal dumping is dangerous as it is near where children play. The best way to eliminate illegal dumping is for the community to adopt a spot which they will beautify and maintain,” he said.
