THE Community Infrastructure Programme, which is being implemented at a ward level, is bearing fruits with over 80 projects underway in various wards. These projects are implemented through ward councillors utilising R3 million allocated to each ward to address service delivery issues. Projects such as building access roads, sidewalks, footpaths, pedestrian walkways as well as hall renovations, outdoor gyms, sports field renovations, and constructing retaining walls are some of the projects being implemented.

Other projects include building ablution blocks, unilateral diversion toilets, installing speed humps and fixing guard rails. Sipho Mthethwa, Coordinator of the Community Infrastructure Projects, said the implementation of these projects is a reflection of the Municipality’s commitment to improving service delivery at a ward level. He urged residents to own and protect the infrastructure brought to them by the Municipality. Sandra Muthu, a Ward 37 resident, praised eThekwini Municipality, through the Ward 37 Councillor, for the installation of retaining blocks in her yard as part of Community Infrastructure Project. “My yard was destroyed during heavy rains with the bank on the verge of collapsing. I was worried every time it rained about soil erosion and the potential damage to my house. Now that I have G-Lock retaining blocks installed, it will protect my house from any further soil erosion,” she said. khayelihle.sengani@durban.gov.za
