Flood victim receives permanent home

Lawrance Sigudu celebrated his move to a permanent home which was built by eThekwini Municipality.

HOPE bloomed for Lawrance Sigudu, 53, when he and his wife moved into their brand-new home built by eThekwini Municipality. The house handover is part of the ongoing Storm disaster Housing Project in Ward 6. Sigudu’s joy was evident when he received the keys to his new home. He said they started a family soon after they were married, but life was tough, and they lived in a shack.

Their informal house was washed away during the 2019 f loods. “Our story reflects the struggles faced by many in Woodyglen. However, this new home signifies a significant change. It is unbelievable that we have a proper home of our own, our dignity has been restored. We don’t have to worry about leaks or water entering whenever it rains. We are incredibly grateful to the Municipality for helping the poor and vulnerable,” said Sigudu.

Ward 6 Councillor Bless Majola elaborated on the project’s scope. “The Storm Disaster Housing Project aims to build over 90 houses in Woodyglen, assisting those affected by the floods in 2019 and 2020. The construction is progressing well, with 18 units completed. We encourage immediate occupancy to prevent hijacking. The project has also created 15 local jobs, equipping residents with valuable skills,” said Councillor Majola.
