Hope restored as community centre development gets underway

Work is underway in Maphephetheni, Nkangala in ward 2 to complete the first multi-functional creche and community centre in the area.

HOPE has been restored for the community of Upper Maphepheni, Nkangala in ward 2 with the construction of a multifunctional development centre well underway. The development will serve as a creche as well as a community centre to hold local gatherings. The R1.9 million project is expected to be completed by March and is being rolled
out in two phases.

Councillor Makhosini Luthuli thanked the community for their support of the project, especially when they encountered
some difficulties “With the widespread damage caused by the floods last year, the Municipality had to reprioritise funds from projects to repair the infrastructural damage in the City. This put a halt on projects such as this one, that were underway,” said Councillor Luthuli. “We are thankful to the community for their support, they’ve played a pivotal role in ensuring construction continues seamlessly. We’ve had very little to no theft on the site as we continue to build in unity.

The project has employed more than 15 people within the community. And as we conclude phase one of the two-part project, we anticipate more locals will be employed,” he added. Phase two of the development will commence with a water project that will supply water to various residents. Councillor Luthuli said a housing project is in the pipeline for the ward with further developments envisioned for Upper and Lower Maphaphatheni in the future.
