The Metro Police executed by-law enforcement along Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street.
THE METRO Police recently conducted a by-law enforcement operation along Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street, known for its street vendors. The operation aimed to tackle the issue of illegal trading, which is a persistent problem in the area. Metro Police Spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu outlined the objectives of the operation. “We are not only working to curb illegal street trading but also to enhance crime prevention through increased police visibility.
These operations are crucial as they help clamp down on businesses selling counterfeit goods and ensures the safety of the community.” Zungu stressed the importance of all traders obtaining permits if they want to trade in public spaces. He said permits could be acquired by applying to the Business Support Unit, a process designed to regulate street trading and maintain order. “The public must understand that you cannot trade in a public space or on sidewalks without a permit.
We encourage everyone to operate within the bounds of the law.” The operation revealed a significant number of violations. Several hawkers were found without the required permits and were subsequently charged. These individuals faced fines and the confiscation of their goods, a harsh but necessary step to enforce the City’s regulations. The City hopes that through continued dialogue and enforcement, a more harmonious and lawful trading environment can be established, benefiting all who live and work in the City
