Isuzu ironman race contributes to city’s status as leading events capital
Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee Councillor Thembo Ntuli welcomed the economic benefi t of the Isuzu Ironman in the City.
THE 2024 Isuzu Ironman 70.3 South Africa, hosted in the City this past weekend was a resounding success, cementing eThekwini Municipality’s status as a leading sporting and events host. The attendance of over 35 000 spectators resulted in increased hotel occupancy rates. This provided an economic boost of a projected R68.6million total direct impact on the City’s economy.
The contribution to the City’s Gross Domestic Product is estimated at R169.7 million with over 306 jobs created. The City’s capability of hosting major events has been recognised by the World Travel Awards for being Africa’s leading festival and event destination for three consecutive years. The sporting race, which took place on 2 June, saw over 3 000 athletes nationally and internationally participate in this prestigious event. The competition comprised of swimming, running and cycling and was attended by over 35 000 spectators.
The activities took place at the Durban’s 3.7-mile-long sandy beach route, known as the Golden Mile. The race ended on a high note with an awards ceremony which honoured the top performing athletes. Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee Councillor Thembo Ntuli attended the race. He said sports tourism is crucial for the City. “We will continue to leverage on partnerships to robustly promote the City as a premium tourism and events destination. Over 23 different media covered the event which provided a strategic opportunity to profi le Durban to visitors and the world at large,” he said. Councillor Ntuli said they are proud to once again collaborate with the Ironman marathon. “It is a race that brings immense revenue to the City and extensive publicity exposure of our beautiful City,” he concluded.
