THE KING EDWARD Hospital in Durban has been renamed the Victoria Mxenge Hospital during an event to celebrate International Nurses Day. The renaming event served to highlight the hospital’s important role in the community and marked a crucial moment in its history. Mxenge was an anti-apartheid activist who was trained as a nurse and midwife. After completing her midwifery training at King Edward Hospital, Mxenge worked as a community nurse at the uMlazi Clinic.
KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane said the renaming of this long-standing institution pays tribute to the legacy of Mxenge, a remarkable woman who fearlessly spoke out against apartheid. MEC Simelane emphasised the importance of nurses feeling safe in their workspaces to provide a service of an impeccable standard. “Nurses are on the forefront. When COVID-19 hit, nurses were the first on the ground.
While many people stayed safe at home, nurses were on the battleground and were the first line of defense. Well done for everything that you do. We see you and appreciate you,” she said. She said nurses are the backbone of healthcare facilities and must be appreciated. Chairperson of the City’s Governance and Human Capital Committee Councillor Nkosenhle Madlala said the renaming of the hospital is to honour a committed stalwart who sacrificed her life for the freedom South Africa enjoys. “She was a staunch antiapartheid activist and as we celebrate 30 years of democracy this year, we remember the commitment that Mama Victoria Mxenge displayed. Her goal was the attainment of freedom for the oppressed. For us, her spirit leaves on and we continue to fight for a better life for all,” he said.
