The first day of the Ngonyameni mass rabies vaccination campaign was a success as residents came out in their numbers to have their pets vaccinated against rabies.

The rabies vaccination drive is being driven by the City’s Health Unit together with the Department of Agriculture.

The campaign follows the tragic death of a three-year-old child in the area who had been in contact with a dog suspected of being infected with rabies. During the vaccination drive, dogs were given two vaccines, one for rabies and one for deworming. The public is urged to look out for these possible rabies symptoms in their dogs including excessive salivation, hallucinations, aggression, abnormal sensitivity to light, and lethargy.
