RESIDENTS currently residing at the Isiphingo Transit Camp will soon have a safe and dignified place to call home when eThekwini Municipality, together with the national and provincial Department of Human Settlements delivers 360 residential units in Isiphingo, ward 90. The Kanku Road Housing Project which is anticipated to be completed in June 2023 started in March 2020.
The project will have all the necessary infrastructure. Additional sites have been set aside to accommodate a sewer pumpstation, a detention tank and an electricity sub-station. All units are planned to have Municipal waterborne sewage, water and electricity, roads and stormwater infrastructure. The development consists of semi-detached double story, high-density housing units. Residents from the Isiphingo Transit Camp said they can barely wait until the day they receive their new homes. “I am very delighted that soon I will have a safe place to live in with my family.
I have been waiting for this time and I am happy that it’s drawing closer. EThekwini Municipality cares for its residents,” said Themba Dlamini, one of the residents who currently resides at the transit camp. Project Manager Nqobile Hadebe, who expressed pride in managing such a huge project, revealed that the residents will be moved into the new houses after the sewer pump station is completed in January. The housing project is being rolled out in phases, with some houses nearly complete. Once the residents have been moved to their new houses, the transit camp will be completely demolished and the area will have its environment rehabilitated.
