A team replaced asbestos pipes with MPVC pipes in Verulam as part of water infrastructure upgrades.
THE eThekwini Water and Sanitation Unit (EWS) has completed the water infrastructure upgrade in Charnwood Road and Tariq Road in Verulam. Teams replaced antiquated asbestos cement pipes with MPVC pipes. The project’s goal is to prolong subterranean water storage and prevent burst pipes which cause water outages.
The project started in April 2022 and was completed late last year. The pipelines that were stacked range in size from 50mm high-density polyethylene to 100mm, covering one kilometre. EWS provided internal funding for the project totalling R1.678 million. Twelve people worked on the project, five of which were internal staff members and seven were community members employed as general workers from the Expended Public Works Programme
