Prepaid electricity customers urged to update their meters

FROM today, 1 August key change tokens will be available for all customers in eThekwini when purchasing prepaid
electricity. The new key change tokens will ensure that prepaid customers are still able to purchase electricity tokens as prepaid electricity meter software must be updated before November 2024.

This initiative falls under the Chairperson of the Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee Councillor Themba Mvubu, pictured. From today going forward, when purchasing a prepaid electricity token, customers will also receive two sets of 20-digit numbers. These tokens will automatically be made available when buying a recharge token from all vendors selling eThekwini electricity including banking apps.

Customers are advised to ensure that they redeem all previously purchased tokens before entering the key change
token as these will become invalid once the key change token has been loaded. “We want to advise prepaid customers that this is a Do It Yourself (DIY) initiative. The Municipality will not be sending contractors to customers’ homes to help them with entering the key change tokens. Residents should not let anyone into their home pretending to offer help with updating prepaid meters,” said Head of Electricity Maxwell Mthembu.

He added that customers must note that the key change tokens are free of charge. It is important for customers to ensure that the key change tokens are entered into the meter. If they are not entered, customers will not be able to make the next purchase of prepaid electricity.
