To minimise the amount of waste going to landfill sites, residents have been encouraged to recycle. Speaking during a workshop held in Clermont recently, Nana Ndlovu, a Manager from Durban Solid Waste said most domestic waste is recyclable.

“Residents can generate money through recyclable waste. Landfill sites are full, and recycling could prolong the lifespan of landfill sites. Recycling can also assist in achieving zero waste,” said Ndlovu.

She said the Municipality is working with organisations to educate residents about keeping their areas clean and the benefits of recycling.
 
Cardboard, paper, and cartons are easy to collect and recycle.

Waste collectors can sell their recyclable waste at buyback centres. A buy back centre is a facility where individual waste collectors and street waste pickers can sell recyclable waste. Buy-back centres in turn sell these waste products to other larger buy-back centres or to recycling companies.
