Residents urged to exercise their rights responsibly

EThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda addressed residents in ward 58 during the City’s commemoration
of Human Rights Day. He encouraged residents to exercise their rights responsibly.

ETHEKWINI Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda has urged residents to exercise their rights responsibly. He was addressing ward 58 residents during the City’s commemoration of Human Rights Day on 21 March at the Canelands Sports Ground.
He said with the human rights enjoyed by South Africans comes the responsibility and understanding of those rights and power.

South Africans celebrated Human Rights Day on 21 March in remembrance of the victims of the Sharpeville massacre in
1960. On that day, 69 people died and 180 were wounded when police fired into the crowd during a peaceful protest against pass laws. According to the Bill of Rights, every citizen has the right to life, equality, and human dignity. “As South Africans we all have the right to basic human necessities. But we also have the responsibility to defend, protect and shield against violations of these rights,” said Mayor Kaunda. Highlighting the importance of unity, Mayor Kaunda said communities should not turn a blind eye to criminality and lawlessness. “Communities have the responsibility to not fuel
criminal activities.

They can refuse to buy stolen goods and report it to the police.” Mayor Kaunda was accompanied by the eThekwini Deputy Mayor Councillor Zandile Myeni, Chief Whip Councillor Patience Sishange, Community Services Chairperson Councillor Zama Sokhabase, ward councillors and officials from various Municipal departments. Mayor Kaunda assured
Canelands residents of their right to proper housing infrastructure, basic education and healthcare, and service delivery.
He said this will be prioritised by the City. He encouraged residents to hold their leaders accountable and to peacefully unify in a quest to bring about positive change. “Working with various Municipal departments, we have tabled and are
in discussions to roll out numerous service delivery projects.
