A play on social ills resonated with learners, teachers, and those in attendance at Amandlethu High School.
AS PART of promoting student engagement and to fight against social ills, the Community Participation and Action Support Unit, through its Children’s Office, is hosting a play in various schools around the City. The play tackles social issues such as teenage pregnancy, bullying, inclusion, and many other societal issues that learners face on a daily basis. Children’s Office Programmes Officer Jabu Ndlovu said learning through plays has proven to be effective. “Last year we had a similar programme and received positive feedback.” Addressing learners at Amandlethu High School, Ndlovu called on them to heed the message from the play and adopt the lessons that were being dramatised as it was a true reflection of what is taking place in schools. “We carefully selected the schools to take the plays to.
We did research to ensure that it was brought to schools that need it the most.” Echoing Ndlovu’s sentiments, Amandlethu Principal Musawenkosi Mlawu said the play couldn’t have come at a better time. “It is disappointing that we find ourselves having to talk about pregnancy, bullying, substance abuse and many other things that have no place in school.” He thanked the Municipality for coming to his school and pledged to continue the good working relationship.
