Tears of joy as gogo receives new home

Doris Sithole, 91, was overcome with emotions when she received her new home. This comes after she lost her home during the floods experienced in the City.

EMOTIONS ran high when Ward 103 Councillor Linda Mchunu presented 91-yearold Doris Sithole with her new home recently. The elderly woman endured a traumatic experience during the 2022 floods when a tree and mudslide crashed onto her house. Miraculously, she survived the harrowing incident, but her home was left in ruins, leaving her without shelter. Ward 103 was plagued by the aftermath of the destructive floods, with the area facing numerous challenges. A record 22 storm disasters were recorded in the vicinity. Amid these dire circumstances, Councillor Mchunu has taken proactive steps to provide relief to the community. Of the damage incurred during the storm disasters, nine houses have been successfully completed, offering new beginnings to those affected.

During the house handover, Councillor Mchunu said the story of Gogo Sithole serves as an important reminder of the resilience and spirit of survival that thrives within when facing adversity. “Her survival against the odds and subsequent gift of a new home reflect the power of community support and solidarity during challenging times,” he said. Expressing her gratitude, Gogo Sithole said: “I never thought I would see the day when I would have a home again. I am truly grateful to Councillor Mchunu and the Municipality for their kindness and generosity.

This new home means the world to me, and I am overwhelmed with emotion,” she said as tears welled up in her eyes. Councillor Mchunu said the completion of nine housing units in Ward 103 signifies a step forward in the restoration and recovery e orts following the devastating floods.

“With each new home provided, hope is reignited, and a sense of stability returns to those who have lost so much. The new home gifted to Gogo Doris symbolises more than just a place to live; it represents a fresh start, a symbol of hope, and a testament to the unwavering spirit of humanity in the face of tribulation,” he concluded.
