Transnet and Kaizer Chiefs join city’s clean-up campaign

Kaizer Chiefs Football Club and Transnet National Ports Authority joined the City in a clean-up campaign led by  Thekwini Deputy Mayor Councillor Philani Mavundla.

KAIZER Chiefs Football Club and Transnet National Ports Authority joined the City in a clean-up campaign held at the Marine Museum car park. The stakeholders worked together to clean around the Durban Harbour and along South Beach. The City’s clean-up campaign is gaining momentum as more businesses and residents are lending a hand to keep the City clean.

EThekwini Deputy Mayor and Chairperson of the Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee Councillor Philani Mavundla led the clean-up. The Deputy Mayor said the clean-up campaign started in September with the aim of creating awareness of littering and illegal dumping. He requested residents and visitors to follow proper waste management practises. Tons of waste was collected on the day which included general waste, clothing items, plastic, polystyrene food packaging, and beverage bottles.

This highlights that people are still not disposing of litter in the correct manner, which poses a threat to humans, the environment, and the marine life. Meanwhile, to play their part to mitigate waste in the City, the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) Office partnered with Defy Appliances, the Cleansing and Solid Waste Unit,
Thorburn Security, Metro Police, and volunteers from the ward 32 -including local businesses - to clean-up Archary Road in Clairwood.

About 30 Defy staff, including the company Chief Executive Officer visiting from Turkey, together with 25 community volunteers were part of the initiative. Deepa Seepersad, Lead Environmental Management Officer for Defy and the recently elected Chair of the Environmental Committee for the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry said: “We will be engaging extensively to bring business on board to keep the City clean and beautiful.” Linda Mbonambi, Chief Operations Officer for eThekwini Municipality said the City is working towards building resilience and enhancing partnerships between various sectors, communities, and government to care for the environment.
