The Township and Rural Business Community My Spaza open day provided a platform to accelerate township economic growth by hosting small and medium-sized businesses from across the City.
A THREE-day Township and Rural Business Community My Spaza open day was hosted by the City’s Informal Economy Department. This provided a platform to accelerate township economic growth by hosting small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) from across the City to showcase their products. The programme was hosted in partnership with the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Standard Bank, Ikhokha, My Spaza, Phoenix Cash and Carry Prospecton and Igwebu.
In her address, Economic Development and Planning Committee Whip Councillor Puleng Hlomuka said the event aimed to provide SMEs with a platform to advertise their goods and services. They would also be able to network with prospective customers to forge business partnerships which in turn will boost the township’s economy. “It gives me great pleasure to see emerging entrepreneurs participating in the My Spaza initiative. I also urge traders to make sure they are operating within the City’s by-laws.” Councillor Hlomuka said the township economy has significant potential. Zama Msomi-Dunga, founder of Bakers on Wheelz, attended the event. She produces freshly baked foods. Among her key challenges is competing with larger businesses who sell their goods for cheaper, which makes it harder for her. She welcomed the opportunity to showcase her business and encourage the community to support local and small businesses.
