Municipal employees sprayed manholes to kill insects around the Durban City Hall during the Mother of All Clean-ups campaign recently.

STAFF from a host of private companies rolled up their sleeves to work alongside Municipal employees during a recent Mother of All Clean-up campaigns. The clean-up was organised by the Area Based Management Unit in partnership with
private companies. It took place on 16 March around the Durban City Hall. The clean-up also aimed to raise awareness among businesses of the waste they produce during the manufacturing process, reiterating the importance of disposing of
their waste correctly.

Businesses in partnership with the Municipality expressed their excitement to be part of the clean-up. The Municipality partnered with BMW uMhlanga, The Edge, The Legacy, MTN and Development Bank of Southern Africa. MTN Accounts Manager Nosihle Maphumulo said private companies must also contribute towards cleanliness as they had a vested interest as the business sector. Acting Head of the Area Based Management Unit Eurakha Singh said the City is accelerating the cleaning and maintenance of infrastructure around Durban. “Collaborative clean-ups could ignite cleanliness in communities and have an impact on educating the public on the importance of eradicating waste in areas
where we live.

We should all play an active role to minimise litter,” said Singh. Acting Head of the Cleansing and Solid Waste Unit Noluthando Magewu said the City has implemented a holistic approach to cleaning where various departments work together in a specifi c area to target all the service delivery challenges at once. “We are working with various stakeholders and businesses to inculcate cleaning initiatives. We are striving to keep the City clean and at a level that will be acceptable to ratepayers and ask business to partner with us,” said Magewu.
